Use this homeowner-friendly planner to explore dehumidifier capacity and drainage options. The result is a preliminary starting point, not an equipment design or guaranteed recommendation.
Find a practical starting point
Answer three questions to get a preliminary capacity range and drainage recommendation. This is a planning aid—not a substitute for a manufacturer sizing chart or fixing an active leak.
Ranges are broad preliminary guidance informed by ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier selection principles. Capacity depends on conditions, room geometry, air exchange and equipment ratings. Current DOE pints/day ratings are not interchangeable with older rating methods.
How to use the result
Match the suggested range to a model’s current DOE-rated pints per day, not its bucket size. Consult ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier guidance for capacity selection. Room humidity, dampness, ceiling height, air movement and water sources all matter. If there is active water intrusion, repair the source first.
Gravity drain or pump?
A gravity hose needs a continuously downhill route to a suitable drain. A higher sink typically requires a pump rated for the lift. Read our sink-drainage guide for routing and safety considerations.
Compare equipment before buying
Our Frigidaire versus Gasbye dehumidifier guide explains two example setups and includes clearly disclosed Amazon affiliate links. Check capacity and drainage suitability before purchasing. For window moisture, see when a dehumidifier can help with condensation.
